Driving School Improvement Through Teacher-Led Research

Building a North-East Evidence Base for 'What Works'

The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority funded programme is building a regional evidence base by supporting teachers to test interventions in their own classrooms. What began with the Education Durham pilot has grown to 64 micro RCTs involving 84 teachers and 1,695 pupils. Attrition across the evidence base remained low. Of the 1,775 pupils who completed a pre-test, 1,695 also completed the post test, an overall attrition rate of 4.51 per cent. This continues the pattern of high teacher engagement and completion observed during the earlier pilot.

Most of the evidence to date is in literacy and numeracy. Trials are designed to sit within normal teaching practice and answer a straightforward question for schools: did this approach make a difference for these pupils? Teachers complete pre and post assessments, with the WhatWorked Teachers platform managing randomisation and analysis. The aim is to go further than the result from one classroom. Individual class-level micro RCTs are small, so findings can be uncertain. When schools repeat the same trial, we can start to see whether a result is replicated elsewhere and build a more reliable estimate of impact as the body of evidence grows.

Pupil Premium Strategy Review 

Our new Pupil Premium Strategy Report is an exciting and impactful piece of work that sheds fresh light on how primary schools across the North East Combined Authority are planning, framing, and evidencing support for disadvantaged pupils.

Drawing on a large-scale, systematic analysis of 552 primary school strategies, the report reveals clear patterns in practice, strengths to build on, and critical gaps where support and evidence are most needed.

With an interactive gap map, practical tools, and a full technical appendix, the study provides schools, governors, and leaders with insight they can act on immediately - supporting decision-making and more effective use of Pupil Premium funding to improve outcomes for pupils.
